چکیده

Heart failure continues to cause major morbidity and mortality in the United States and worldwide. As operative techniques and immunosuppression have improved over the last several decades, orthotopic cardiac transplantation has become the preferred alternative for treatment of end-stage heart failure. However, a lack of an adequate supply of donors, the problems of chronic rejection, as well as continued high costs have kept the application of this procedure limited. This has fostered the development of several artificial devices, many of which are currently undergoing clinical trials. Rather than using an artificial mechanical device, our laboratory has developed and studied pumping chambers constructed from latissimus dorsi muscle which we term skeletal muscle ventricles or SMVs. This report will focus on two effective applications of SMVsthe diastolic aortic counterpulsator model and the left ventricular apex-to-aorta model.

Endurance training induces fiber type-specific revascularization in hindlimb skeletal muscles of rats with chronic heart failure

Objective(s): Previous studies showed that skeletal muscle microcirculation was reduced in chronic heart failure. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of endurance training on capillary and arteriolar density of fast and slow twitch muscles in rats with chronic heart failure. Materials and Methods: Four weeks after surgeries (left anterior descending (LAD) artery occlusion), chr...

Impact of Aerobic Exercise on Restoration of Soleus and Gastrocnemius Muscles Microcirculations in Wistar Rats with Chronic Heart Failure

ABSTRACT         Background and Objective: Scientific evidence reveals that the density of skeletal muscle microcirculations decreases in the patients with chronic heart failure. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the impact of submaximal aerobic exercise training on restoration of fast/slow-twitch muscle fibers microcirculation in rats with myocard...

A Critical Review of Experimental and Clinical Results

Skeletal muscle cardiac assist (SMCA) is emerging as a promising form of surgical treatment for end-stage heart failure. In one form, cardiomyoplasty, the muscle is wrapped around the heart and then activated by electrical stimulation to augment myocardial contraction.1 Cardiomyoplasty has been performed in more than 400 cases worldwide with variable degrees of success. Despite excellent sympto...

Power output of skeletal muscle ventricles in circulation: short-term studies.

Skeletal muscle ventricles (SMVs) were constructed from preconditioned latissimus dorsi muscles in eight dogs and then connected to each animal's systemic arterial circulation in short-term experiments. The lengths of time that SMVs could produce hemodynamic work as left ventricular assist devices were recorded. After 4 hr of continuous pumping at approximately 55 beats/min, six of eight SMVs w...

L-Carnitine: a potential treatment for blocking apoptosis and preventing skeletal muscle myopathy in heart failure.

Skeletal muscle in congestive heart failure is responsible for increased fatigability and decreased exercise capacity. A specific myopathy with increased expression of fast-type myosins, myocyte atrophy, secondary to myocyte apoptosis triggered by high levels of circulating tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) has been described. In an animal model of heart failure, the monocrotaline-treated...
